I am a printmaker and photographer living in San Francisco.  My name -- Murray -- is derived from the Moray region of Scotland and means "settlement by the sea."  It's no wonder that I am drawn to coastlines, the edges of things, wherever land meets tidal water.  Birds-eye views of landscapes and time spent near oceans, ice pack, and marshes inspire the colors, shapes, compositions, and textures of my work.
I have been an artist in residence at KALA Art Institute in Berkeley, California since 2023 and have been awarded The Arctic Circle, Artica, and In Cahoots artists’ residencies.  I received a BA in semiotics from Brown University, a JD from the University of California Hastings College of the Law (now UC Law SF), and a certificate in digital photography from the City College of San Francisco.  I have studied printmaking at CCSF, KALA, and Crown Point Press.
My art practice began when I was very young growing up in the District of Columbia.  My mother was an accomplished watercolorist and encouraged us to always be making something, a habit I continue to this day.  I cycled through painting, sewing, knitting, weaving, stained glass, and technical theater and discovered that I simply enjoy the process of making.  Being able to roam the free national museums in D.C. set me on a course for appreciating and, eventually, making art.
As a teenager, I developed a passion for film photography from pouring over Time-Life books and hanging out in the darkroom my older brother built in our house.  As for printmaking, pressing ink into paper is a thrill hard-wired into me by my great-grandfather, a Scottish letterpress man.
